Characteristics of surge-type tributary glaciers, Karakoram

چکیده

The Karakoram has a large concentration of surge-type glaciers, including 69 tributary compared to 152 main or trunk glaciers. paper addresses the interactions between and glaciers using digital elevation models (DEMs), surface displacement, field archival reports. In particular, it explores behavior impacts 13 glacier surges on three namely Hispar, Braldu Panmah. Observations include five surge tributaries Panmah, Braldu, Hispar. We observed ASTER DEMs can help in some cases detect signature where automated displacement does not surge. also substantial differences dimensions, timing histories their tributaries. East III surged 2000 2003, whereas IV from 2003 2006, but these periods, no other shows signature. Between 2013 2016, Glacier along with four out except West I. Drenmang blocked flow Nobande Sobonde 2004 2006. Such transfer by is referred here surge-modified ice. It introduces indirect post-surge effects complicates delay tracking responses climate change. Also, mass balance differ systematic direct non-surge-type Therefore, more research monitoring required address distinct individual better understand heterogeneity Karakoram.

A surge of North Gasherbrum Glacier, Karakoram, China

Between 2003 and 2007, North Gasherbrum Glacier on the northeastern slope of the Karakoram mountains in Asia underwent a dramatic acceleration, during which a velocity wave propagated down the glacier. There was a significant transfer of ice from up-glacier downstream, which resulted in a strong surface elevation increase over the lower tongue, but only a moderate advance of the glacier snout. ...

The 2015 Surge of Hispar Glacier in the Karakoram

The Karakoram mountain range is well known for its numerous surge-type glaciers of which several have recently surged or are still doing so. Analysis of multi-temporal satellite images and digital elevation models have revealed impressive details about the related changes (e.g., in glacier length, surface elevation and flow velocities) and considerably expanded the database of known surge-type ...

Observations on rock glaciers in the Himalayas and Karakoram Mountains of northern Pakistan and India

Rock glaciers are abundant in the Lahul and Garhwal Himalayas of northern India and the Karakoram Mountains of northern Pakistan. They exhibit morainic and protalus forms and are restricted altitudinally and climatically to sites above approximately 4000 m asl. and regions where annual precipitation is less than 1000 mm. In these areas, morainic rock glaciers are large, usually )1 km long, )100...

Estimating the volume of glaciers in the Himalayan–Karakoram region using different methods

Ice volume estimates are crucial for assessing water reserves stored in glaciers. Due to its large glacier coverage, such estimates are of particular interest for the Himalayan–Karakoram (HK) region. In this study, different existing methodologies are used to estimate the ice reserves: three area–volume relations, one slope-dependent volume estimation method, and two ice-thickness distribution ...

Slight mass gain of Karakoram glaciers in the early twenty-first century

Assessments of the state of health of Hindu-Kush–Karakoram– Himalaya glaciers and their contribution to regional hydrology and global sea-level rise suffer from a severe lack of observations1. The globally averaged mass balance of glaciers and ice caps is negative1–3. An anomalous gain of mass has been suggested for the Karakoram glaciers2,4–6, but was not confirmed by recent estimates of mass ...
